Design a feature film poster for our open source movie.
Fame/riches to follow…
Palla has released his latest stunning image for A Swarm of Angels visualisations under a Creative Commons license (CC-BY-NC-SA 3.0), so we can use it as the main photographic element of our teaser poster for The Unfold. We’d like you to make the final design.
Brief:
The image explores one of the main visual effects of the story — the idea of the world splitting, fracturing, and unfolding. The poster should showcase this using the photograph as a core visual, but with additional typographic and illustrative elements as the designer sees fit. This is an opportunity to indulge in classic and artistic poster design free of the usual commercial imperatives and informational clutter associated with many modern examples.
Posters format:
Final size - A2 (16.5 x 23.4 in — 420 x 594 mm). Portrait or landscape aspect ratio.
Submissions should be preview jpegs no more than 1500 pixels in length maximum.
All images submitted must fall under a Creative Commons CC-BY-NC license, with the winning image able to be used in all ASOA activities.
The winning design will be decided through discussion at The Nine Orders forums, alongside Palla and myself. Besides the poster being printed, as well as featured in future publicity and exhibitions, the designer will be entitled a revenue share of any proceeds from the poster.
Submissions are welcome from members and non-members of the Swarm. You can enter by posting a link to your poster image in the comments (contact us for any questions).
The final poster will be made available for purchase so please join the swarm or sign-up to the mailing list to be kept informed and register your interest.
Elements required for poster
- Title: The Unfold
- Main image: Palla 964 Cityscape (Download Posterpack)
- Other text: A film by A Swarm of Angels, An open movie, www.aswarmofangels.com, Main photograph by Palla www.pallalink.net, Design by XXX,
- Other graphic elements: A Swarm of Angels logo, Creative Commons image (CC-NC-SA 3.0)
- Download Posterpack (Palla’s 964 Cityscape image + A Swarm of Angels logo files)
- Creative Commons image presskit page
Please post your poster link in the comments below (moderated).
Deadline: June 1st, 2007
EDIT: EXTENDED DEADLINE: We had a few requests to extend the deadline so those who just missed it can get the work in still by June 6th, 2007.
We’re really pleased with the response so far with over 50 comments.

Good point. June 1st. Will amend entry.

I understand that this photo is the core visual but does every part of it have to be used?
May 24th, 2007 at 4:55 am
matt
@Nicolas: The CC license it is under means you can adapt and remix the work. So the answer is no, you do not have to use all of the picture, or ‘as is’.
Please adapt/remix as you see fit.

How many designs are we allowed to submit for the voting? Will our last one be taken? Or the one we say? Or can they all be judged on their own merits?
May 24th, 2007 at 8:08 pm
Chris
Hey number 2 ain’t so bad… I like where this poster is going, any debate and or direction is definitely welcome? If allowed?
I like the way all the items appear to radiate from the triangle of light, the straight, vertical extension of the header lettering serves to disorientate the viewer when trying to gain a comfortable view on what looks to be a frame fallen askew. I have broken up the clean font face to further enforce this seemingly unraveling state of chaos. Might play with a more rounded version, of a similar weight font. Light guides the viewers eye across the relevant secondary information and down to the CC logo. The secondary info bar serves to ground the smaller copy, as well as act as a tag like device, directing the viewers eye eventually to a minute point on the freeway. This draws or invites the audience into our journey. Think I’ll try some other colour combinations, but like the strength of the red, black and white. Possibly exchange just the red?
Enjoy.

@codplay:
> how many designs can we submit?
Good question. I think 3 max, but all will be judged on their own merits. There is no penalty for having more than 1 entry.

I’d love to hear what you think - drop me a line…
I can’t find a way to get the larger image uploaded to the net - any help with that would be appreciated.
My thanks for the fun,

Are we supposed to create just this low-res preview or the final hi-res image as well?
May 26th, 2007 at 6:41 am
matt
@tronic: Thanks for the query. The low-res preview with the provided preview image is fine (the 1500px dimensions mean they should translate well to print thumbnails if we need to get a snapshot of entries in print. - and we are translating these to web snapshots of 376px width for consistency in the comments as we get them.
Only our winner will need to be super high-res (I wanted to spare the 68M download, and meddling with superlarge file sizes in the first instance for people).
OK?
May 27th, 2007 at 6:29 am
Codplay
So, what you are saying is make them at print resolution in case you win, but only bother exporting them at 1500px?
Also, what are we looking at for print resolution? 300ppi? 400?
Ahh - all the little questions of a little green designer.
May 27th, 2007 at 11:35 am
matt
@codplay: thnx for the question.
what i’m saying is if you just want to make a low-res sketch rather than work with the high res files then you should (because the original photo file is 68megs), and that is why a approx 1.5 meg photo download is provided rather than the much bigger original.
Only the winner needs to be print res 300 dpi.

Hey David, we were getting shortlist from the advisor team.
I’ll be posting the result from this next week, and it will be included as part of another voting round. I notified the participants what was happening, but neglected to make an update on the post. Sorry!
Cut a long story short, you’ll know this coming week…. [update: I’m going to integrate this in a member vote toward the end of the month)
